Northeast India, often regarded as the cradle of the Indian Exploration and Production (E&P) industry and holds a distinctive position in the oil and gas sector. The discovery of Asia's first oil took place in Digboi, Assam, in 1889, followed by the establishment of Asia's inaugural refinery in Digboi in 1901. Independent India's first discovery of oil and gas also occurred in Assam. Despite this rich legacy, the economic progress of the Northeast lags behind that of other states of India.

To leverage the potential of the hydrocarbon sector for social and economic development of the northeast region, Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has unveiled the Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 for Northeast. This vision places significant emphasis on the development of City Gas Distribution and CNG networks in the region.

Assam Gas Company Limited and Oil India Limited have jointly promoted the North-East Gas Distribution Company Limited (NEGDCL). This entity aims to develop City Gas Distribution networks and CNG Stations in six districts of the North Bank of Assam and six districts in Tripura.

NEGDCL is committed to making Natural Gas widely available to the people in its authorized area at an affordable price. The availability of Natural Gas will create an ecosystem that promotes smart urban development, reduces carbon footprints and enhances the overall quality of life. NEGDCL aims to significantly enhance the socio-economic development of the region.
